The origin of the Margarita has been attributed to a hotel in Puebla, a bar in Taxco, a San Antonio socialite in Acapulco, a racetrack in Tijuana, and even to various locales in Los Angeles and San Diego. Wherever it came from, by the 1930s, it was popular both in Mexico and the US.

There are those who insist the Margarita was concocted by Danny Herrera, the bartender at the Rancho La Gloria bar in Tijuana, and that he created it for an aspiring actress named Marjorie King. King was allergic to all liquors except tequila, the story goes, so Herrera used tequila to create a drink he named her Spanish name, Margarita.

daisy Another group holds that the Margarita was invented by Pancho Morales, the bartender of Tommy's Bar in Juarez, and that he called it a Margarita, after the Spanish for daisy.

And then there's the contingent who claim that it was really Dallas socialite Margarita Sames who came up with the cocktail—at a Christmas party in her vacation home in Acapulco. Her guest list included hotel tycoon Tommy Hilton who introduced Margarita's drink to his hotel chain, naming it after her—and the rest, they say, is history
